People say life is the thing, but I prefer reading*

An occasion where my blog might come in useful...

I don't really have much in the way of news. My cat pooped on the sofa. I've got a lovely spot appearing on my chin. I have been unable to stop singing show tunes for the last two days (thanks to SpanishGoth). I feel like I should be wearing a tophat and swinging a cane around.

On a kind-of-related note, Fiance and I have been trying to pick the song to which we will dance our first dance as a married couple. It's really quite difficult (read: effing nightmare). We don't have 'a song' that means anything to us (well there is one but it's not appropriate for the occasion*), so we're having to pick one that we both like, that is easy to shuffle about a dancefloor to, and that won't make our mums cry too much. They're going to anyway, but we want to minimise the blubbing as much as we can, for obvious reasons.

The Boy wanted Highway To Hell, which I felt was a bit of a negative way to start our married life. It's probably fairly appropriate but my granny would be horrified. We don't want any Robbie Williams/Whitney Houston cheesefest shit, so far our shortlist consists of the following:

  • Something by the Foo Fighters (possibly an acoustic version of either Big Me, Everlong or Best of You or well... any Foos song to be honest)
  • Tonight Tonight, Smashing Pumpkins
  • Follow You Down, Gin Blossoms
  • Time Of Your Life, Green Day
  • Iris, Goo Goo Dolls

It's not really a shortlist though, because we can't agree on any of these songs, and none of them have really knocked our socks off as 'the one'.

Any ideas?

*He used to play Magic Bus for me when I used to go (on the bus, natch) to visit him when we first got together way back when. He would sing the irritating falsetto bit as well (#too much, magic bus#). You're going to be singing that all day aren't you?!

Have you listened to 'Miracle' on Foo Fighters In your Honour (disc 2 all acoustic)
Lyrics are great for a wedding song
goes like this
'hands on a miracle
I've got my hands on a miracle
and there aint no way that you'll
take it away...'
listen to it it's lovely and sorry for the show tunes but made me laugh.xx

Actually BF and I have KUBB Wicked Soul as out song. . .it reminds us of last Christmas when we thought life couldn't get any better and yet it did.

We thought it would be impossible to ever have something like THAT as our song and then we heard an acoustic version. . .sometimes slowed down, songs have meanings you didn’t even know where there.

As for Foo Fighters – “I’m a brand new star to hang the stars upon tonight” is one of the best lines of poetry I know.

I like ONE by U2 but that’s probably a bit too clichéd. I'll have it as my funeral song.

GTTT - Ah, hadn't thought of Miracle... I will listen tonight. As for the show tunes, don't worry - it's becoming something of a theme!

DQ - It does add a different dimension to a song doesn't it? I love the acoustic version of Everlong. Course we also have to think of how easy it is to dance to, and whether the lyrics are appropriate #sigh#. I like One as well but I think it'll make the mums cry. Plus the Boy hates U2 with a passion.

Goth - Why did you delete your comment?! Were you worried about the damage to your rep for posting the lyrics of Fiddler On The Roof?!

Had to remove the previous post - seemed funny when I was doing it but it wasn't (I'd copied and pasted Matchmaker Matchmaker but it went on, and on, and on and ....)

Seriously, I would have a listen to:- Queensryche - Silent Lucidity
The Mission - Tower of Strength
HIM - The Sacrament
Jeff Buckley - New Year's Prayer
U2 - Beautiful Day
Good luck my dear

Strike the U2 one off then - I'd run out of ideas.

Aren't you meant to make the mum's cry at your wedding?

At 14.2.07, Blogger Pickle said...

Thanks Goth - will investigate these.

DQ - they will cry, I know that. I don't want them to, but they will. I just want to minimise it by not having a mucho-soppy, heart-rending song for our first dance...

how bout this then in keeping with the show tune style

'you're just too good to be true
can't take my eyes of you
you feel like heaven to touch
i want to hold you so much
at long last love has arrived
and i thank god i'm alive
your just too good to be true
can't take my eyes of you

da ra da ra daradadada
da ra da ra daradadada
da ra da ra daradadadaaaa
i love you baby
and if it's quite alright
i need you baby
to warm the lonely nights'

etc etc etc
usually best when you're drunk, but it's your wedding and you probably will be!

Ah that's a good suggestion! Not your average first dance song...

How about something like "Why Can't A Woman, Be More Like a Man?" from My Fair Lady?

I know, I'm evil too; but I don't have a blog you can get me back on! :-)

I guess "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" isn't really appropriate either.

Seriously, I've no idea what to suggest; but if it was me I'd be looking for something that's under 3 minutes long. The sooner I can get off the dancefloor and back to the bar the better!

Lynx's comment made me laugh because I was just about to tell you about my friend who wants "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" as his first dance song at his wedding. Don't know how the girl he marries will feel about that...

My second-choice 1st dance song (just barely lost out to what we actually danced to) was "But I do Love You" by Leann Rymes (is that how you spell her name?)

At 14.2.07, Blogger Cat said...

I'm inclined to suggest something by Morrissey, because I Lurve Him, but I suspect they may be less than appropriate...

At 14.2.07, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Hang the DJ" might be appropriate, certainly at a couple of wedding receptions I've been to. Anyone who tries to mix Guns'n'Roses into "Rhythm is a Dancer" by Snap would be a prime candidate for the noose; and I have heard it done. Trust me, it doesn't work!

At 14.2.07, Blogger Pickle said...

Lynx - yes, short is good. And it has to be easy to dance to. And not too weepy. We're fucked really.

(And we're having a live band so there won't be any Guns 'n Roses/Snap action. If there is I'll sue em!)

Audrey - now you have to tell us what you actually did dance to?!

Cat - I don't reckon there's any Morrissey numbers on sites like OurFirstDance

#gag#

Which is as good a reason as any to pick one of his songs!

Oh, what about madness - 'must be love, love, love. . .'

At 15.2.07, Blogger Pickle said...

Somethin Stupid?! I'm getting into it now!

we're having "the reason" by hoobastank. it's beautiful (despite the UGLY band name...)

hello, by the way.

Hello SG - ta for visiting! The Reason is a nice song - I've heard it but never knew who sang it. It's on The List!
